Accessible Pocket Park

Project Objective: To design a handicap-accessible pocket park on a vacant parcel in Youngstown.

parks and recreation; land reutilization

A Youngstown City Council member came to us with a back-of-a-napkin sketch (literally) for a parklet concept in her ward. The parcel sits adjacent to a senior living facility, and the priorities for this space were clear:

  1. Create a handicap-accessible public space that can bring greenery to this heavily-trafficked intersection

  2. Incorporate a labyrinth in partnership with a local nonprofit, The Urban Labyrinth Project

  3. Create space for vehicular parking

In addition to maintaining symmetry in the design, we were beholden to a strict budget. We aimed for low-cost methods in creating handicap accessibility, and positioned the paths to be enjoyed leisurely, or as a cut-through. If built, this would be the first park or greenspace in Youngstown’s 6th ward.
